Part of a larger group, which changes what we can offer

The practice sits within New York Medicine Doctors, a physician-owned multi-specialty group that also covers primary care, urology and interventional radiology. That last one matters more than it sounds. Interventional radiology was added to the group specifically to build out embolization, which means uterine fibroid embolization and pelvic vein embolization are performed by colleagues down the hall rather than by a practice you have never met on the other side of a referral.

The same is true on the urology side. Roughly half of urology patients are women, and a great deal of what they come in with — recurrent urinary tract infections, overactive bladder, kidney stones, blood in the urine — sits exactly on the boundary between our specialty and theirs. A woman with her fourth urinary infection in a year does not need to start again with strangers; she needs the gynecologic and urologic halves of the problem looked at together, and here they can be.

How we run appointments

Most of what we see has been dismissed at least once before it reaches us. Periods heavy enough to plan a week around. Pelvic pain that three clinicians called normal. Hot flushes and broken sleep answered with a remark about age. None of that is a reason to be brisk. Visits are scheduled with enough time to take a proper history, because in gynecology the history is the diagnostic instrument and most of the answer is usually somewhere in it.

We also say what the evidence does and does not support. Where guideline bodies disagree — and on breast screening intervals, on when to start cervical screening, on hormone therapy, they genuinely do — we tell you that they disagree rather than presenting one position as settled fact. Where a treatment is fashionable and unproven, we say so, even when we offer it.

Languages

Between our clinicians the practice covers English, Spanish, French, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese and American Sign Language, and the website is published in English, Spanish, Russian and Chinese. A good number of patients are here because they can speak to a clinician directly rather than through an interpreter, which changes how much of a history actually gets told.
